Data scraping (the automated extraction of data from websites other digital sources) is often used to harvest information which may then be used for new purposes. The recent focus on data scraping for the use in the development of AI LLMs has shone the light on a problem almost as old as the internet itself, how to improve products and services using data that is held by others. In this session the panel will look at the practice of data scraping, its implications, and the different approaches to its regulation in the digital landscape. The discussion will focus on the opportunities that lawful data scraping presents for research, analysis, and development and balance this by identifying the challenges of different regulatory regimes and how these can be addressed with careful risk mitigation measures.
